Its 58 dreamy villas all feature seductive beds and bath tubs open to the outdoors, with private pools for cooling dips (choose between beach, spa or waterside settings). After quality pampering at the Six Senses Spa, make a date with a sunlounger on the secluded beach. REUTERS/Handout

2. Cap d’Antibes Beach Hotel, Côte d’Azur, France
With design as glittering as the surrounding sea, chic Côte d’Azur retreat Cap d’Antibes Beach Hotel in the south of France is all about Gallic glamour. Once a beachside club for the jet-set, including film stars Sofia Loren and Cary Grant, this heavenly hotel has its own beach for sandy sojourns. With just 27 rooms, it’s intimate, too; Deluxe Room 208 has dazzling views, but Room 201 has a fabulous fish mural. Even the restaurant is named Les Pecheurs (The Fishermen) after the maritime setting. Dine here for gastronomic gravitas, or casual beachside Le Cap serves up pasta, fish and local dishes by the waves. Bring this season’s swimwear for poolside posing.

3. Lizard Island, Great Barrier Reef, Australia
For a romantic hotel on the Great Barrier Reef, look no further than Australian boutique retreat Lizard Island, a short flight from Cairns off the Far North Queensland coast. With just 40 secluded rooms and 24 ivory-white beaches to choose from, you’re likely to have a seductive cove of sand all to yourself for that picnic by the waves. Swim off the beach, take a kayak or boat out, or go snorkeling or diving at famous Cod Hole on the outer reef with turtles and rays for company. Back at base camp, enjoy a hot-stone massage at Azure Spa, then dine on fresh fish and seafood at airy Osprey’s restaurant. This idyllic island has honeymoon written all over it. REUTERS/Handout

4. The Datai, Langkawi, Malaysia
Set on beach-blessed Langkawi Island, a back-to-nature getaway off Malaysia’s northwest coast, the Datai occupies a dramatic perch between pure white-sand beaches and verdant rainforest. Famed for its opulence, this beachfront luxury hotel attracts the great and the glam, with 112 wood-crafted rooms, including standalone villas in jungle pockets. The striking main pool boasts beach views, and is for adults only, so you can relax in peace. Alternatively, take a couple’s cooking class, enjoy a spa or yoga session, or go on a guided nature walk (look out for monkeys and eagles). With delicious Malaysian and Thai dishes up for grabs, as well as a beach club restaurant, dining is an affair in itself. REUTERS/Handout

5. Masseria Torre Coccaro, Puglia, Italy
A fortified farmhouse set amid sea-scented olive groves, Masseria Torre Coccaro boutique hotel in Puglia offers refined romance on Italy’s Adriatic shores. Located between Brindisi and Bari on the country’s south-east coast, its 37 stone-walled rooms are exquisitely decorated with linen bedding, silky sofas, baroque mirrors and antique furniture. Chill out in a poolside hammock, warm up in the Turkish baths or treat yourself in the Aveda spa. For nautical romance, commandeer Masseria’s private 14-meter yacht, then relax at the beach club restaurant. The hotel also runs a horse riding center, if you fancy a trot along the sand. 6. Zeavola, Ko Phi Phi, Thailand
One of the only boutique hotels on the intimate twin islands of Koh Phi Phi, Zeavola resort is a sandy seaside hamlet of traditional Thai huts blending relaxed rusticity with mod-con indulgence. An affordable spot to savour beautiful shores, it offers 52 freestanding villas (beachfront ones are the most romantic – plump for number 51, nearest the sea). Inside, net-draped beds, teak surfaces and Thai furniture keep things simple. When you’ve overdosed on swimming and sunbathing, learn to dive at the PADI center or take a speedboat trip around the islands, then settle in at Tecada beach bar and restaurant for some serious sunset-scoping. 7. Martinhal Beach Resort & Hotel, Sagres, Portugal
Set at Sagres on the wild south-west coast of Portugal’s Algarve, Martinhal Beach Resort & Hotel is beloved by beachcombers, with an inviting stretch of sand and a national park for neighbors. Natural materials rule in the 38 rooms, from cork to timber, wicker and stone, ensuring ocean views remain the star of the show. The Beach Rooms are the most private, with sea vistas from airy balconies. Floor-to-ceiling windows bring the outdoors in at O Terraço restaurant, too, where sea urchin roe with scrambled egg is a must. Distractions include tennis courts, a sports club, pools, watersports, a spa, sauna and steam rooms, but strolling along the seductive beaches at Sagres’ fishing port takes some beating. 8. Cocoa Island, Maldives, Indian Ocean
To rev up the romance, escape to serene sanctuary Cocoa Island, a cluster of 33 suites and villas set over the Indian Ocean in the Maldives. A hit with honeymooning couples and lovers of pristine diving, it’s the stuff of faraway island fantasies. All rooms are individual at-sea dwellings sited off a snaking wooden pier, with private sun-decks, walk-in showers, roll-top baths and vintage-style ceiling fans. Resembling Keralan boathouses, they promise over-water views, soothing white interiors and teak flooring for laid-back romance. Scuba diving and snorkeling on the reef are mind-blowing, or just explore the holistic Como Shambhala Spa. Cocktails at poolside bar Faru beckon for re-intoxicating after. REUTERS/Handout

9. Shore Club Miami, Miami, United States
Miami meets Marrakech at Shore Club Miami, a stylish 309-room retreat in the heart of South Beach. This art deco hotel is a hedonistic playground for grown-ups by day or night, with a sexy retro lobby, sprawling lawns, the slinky Skybar and a branch of acclaimed Japanese restaurant Nobu. The party people may flock here, but it’s a romantic spot, too. Bag a sleek white room with a balcony sea view, loaded with hi-tech treats, then head down to the steamy hot tub and two elevated infinity-edge pools, fringed by decadent cushion-strewn day-beds. Luxurious, tropical and right by the beach. You’ve so arrived…REUTERS/Handout

10. Alila Villas Soori, Bali, Indonesia
Strung along Bali’s south-west coast between black-sand beaches and jade-green rice paddies, just-remote-enough Indonesian retreat Alila Villas Soori is seriously seductive. All 48 of its pool villas are sublime, minimal havens with ocean views, but book a second-storey Ocean Pool Villa for a blue bonus: a sea-view bath tub. After lazing by the beach or 25-meter infinity pool, enjoy a slumber-inducing Balinese massage at Spa Alila. Surfing, horse-riding and cycling are all on offer, or ask the Leisure Concierge to hook you up with bespoke visits to local food markets, artisans or romantic temples. Just steps off Kelating Beach, the resort’s casual restaurant Coast grills fresh seafood over charcoal or clink glasses at more formal restaurant Cotta. REUTERS/Handout

Vietnam continues to accrue accolades for its hotels as Travel + Leisure named three to its list of ‘World’s Best Hotel Values’ in the March 2011 issue.
The Caravelle Hotel in Ho Chi Minh City, the Sofitel Legend Metropole Hanoi and the Hilton Hanoi Opera all won spots on the ‘Top 20 Hotels for Value Overall’ list in Travel + Leisure, itself one of North America’s top two highest circulating travel magazines.
Vietnam was second only to the United States in the number of hotels among the top 20.
“Value is one of the hottest travel trends of 2011,” said John Gardner, general manager of the Caravelle. “Given the recent global slump, and uncertainty over the kind of rebound the economy has actually made, we expect this trend to continue through the year.”
The winners, chosen by Travel + Leisure readers in the magazine’s World’s Best Awards Survey, each offer rooms for USD 300 a night or less.
The Caravelle and the Metropole recently won placement on Travel + Leisure’s list of the top 500 hotels in the world. The Metropole also won placement on the Conde Nast Traveler Gold List, as well as more than 20 other prestigious lists in 2010.
In the same issue of Travel + Leisure, Sheraton Nha Trang Hotel & Spa was included in a lengthy feature on the ‘Best Affordable Beach Resorts’ in the world. The Sheraton was the only Vietnam resort in this list.
The T+L honor comes on the heels of recognition of Nha Trang by Expedia.com.au, which called the city one of the 10 ‘Best Beach Destinations’ internationally in a December press release.

More Russian tourists are coming to Vietnam and using luxurious services. Some complained that they didn’t find places to spend money in Vietnam.
|
|
|
Hoang Huu Loc, Deputy director of Saigontourist, said that many Russian tourists don’t travel a lot in Vietnam. They prefer to go to resorts and are willing to pay for high-class services.
According to Loc, Russian tourists often request high-class services, from accommodations to food, vehicles, etc. Their spending is always much higher than tourists from other countries.
Andrey Matveev, Director of Top Tour, one of the top ten travel firms in Russia, said that with high economic growth in Russia in recent years, many Russian people have extremely high income. The demand for overseas travel is abundant and they are willing to pay. Many Russian tourists came to Vietnam on leased flights and they hired helicopters to visit Ha Long Bay.
Khlyakhovoy Andrey, Chair of the Far East Bank, who led a group of 170 Russian tourists who came to Vietnam on a leased flight, said that if Vietnam boosts advertisement in Russia, he was sure that many Russia would go to Vietnam.
On a flight from Phu Quoc Island in Kien Giang province back to HCM City, Valentin Andreev, a businessman from Novosibirsk city, said that the one unsatisfactory thing of his family vacation in Phu Quoc was “There is nothing to spend money for” and his family planned to spend a lot of money in their tour.
In Mui Ne (Binh Thuan province), which annually attracts more than 50,000 Russian visitors, many mui ne resort are built to serve Russian only. However, they lack staff who can speak Russian. There is only one licensed tour guide who speaks Russian in Binh Thuan.
Russia is among 15 key markets of the Vietnam tourism industry. The Vietnam National Administration of Tourism (VNAT) aims to attract 350,000 Russian visitors in 2015, equivalent to the market for French tourists.
Since late 2008, Russian visitors have been exempt from visa to Vietnam. Last year Vietnam welcomed 100,000 Russian tourists.

A lot of big ho chi minh hotels have been introducing their services, programs and events on their websites in order to help tour organizers consider designing MICE (meeting, incentive, convention, event) tours on demand.
|
|
|
Services diversified
Tourism experts say that international tourists and businessmen nowadays not only want to attend conferences and exhibitions at hotels and convention centers, but they also want to meet experts to discuss issues in fields of common interests. Therefore, Vietnamese service providers have been trying to diversify their services to attract more clients.
Many hotels in Vietnam have been introducing special dishes on the websites, and trying to organize cooking classes for their MICE guests. If the guests want, they can even go to market to select ingredients for cooking themselves. In general, hotels assign their cooks, who are in charge of Vietnamese cuisine, to show guests how to cook Vietnamese dishes. The cooks also act as “tour guides” in the “tours to the markets”. Cooking classes have become a regular part of the program designed for the guests at Sofitel Saigon Plaza, Rex Saigon, Caravelle saigon and InterContinental Asiana Saigon.
Discovering the taste of Vietnamese cuisine is just a part of the service package called “Insider Collection” and the sightseeing tour to HCM City offered by InterContinental Asiana Saigon. The hotels’ Business and Marketing Director Daniel Kipping, said that convention organizing companies can access www.intercontinental.com/meetings to choose predesigned normal convention packages, or design the packages themselves according to their demand.
The big hotel chain has introduced a program to be applied at the group’s hotels which includes new services which allow travelers to meet and discuss with famous persons or experts in the fields of culture or sports. The main goal of the program is to provide tourists with deeper knowledge about Vietnam which may be helpful for them in making decisions whether to do business in Vietnam. The program was introduced at InterContinental Singapore in 2010 and InterContinental Asiana Saigon in January 2011.
Through video clips, the hotel has introduced event organizers to trips to the Notre Dame Cathedral, the HCM City’s Post Office, Le Cong Kieu antiques street, Cu Chi tunnels, or sightseeing trips in the central area with motorbike taxis – one of the most popular means of transport in the city. Besides service packages with dinners on the cruisers running up and down the Saigon River, participants can also enjoy Vietnam’s iced milk-coffee, learning about the city’s life at 30-4 Park, tasting banh xeo (a kind of cake), purchasing silk products and pictures.
Kipping said that the video clip and the information from Insider Collection should be seen as suggestions for event organizers to design suitable outdoors activities.
Caravelle Saigon has also updated its website with information and images about cultural and historical sites, targeting the travelers who seek places to relax or organize trips for businessmen and MICE tourists.
Cooperation will bring benefits
Le Trung Tho, Tourism and Service Director of Thanh Thanh Cong company, said that the demand of MICE tourists has become more diversified, and that travelers nowadays always seek information online and order service packages which fit their plans and requirements.
Tho said that more and more MICE travelers wish to learn more about Vietnam through the discussions with experts. They also want to participate in bicycle trips to villages to learn about the lifestyle and traditions of local residents.
The high quality convention service packages are always ordered by foreign groups of businessmen and tourists through event organizers via mail, or ordered on the websites. Therefore, many hotels now pay more attention to developing their websites, which saves money because they can get orders directly from clients instead of via brokers.
Kipping said that clients not only demand meeting rooms with modern equipments, but also order sideline events. As one hotel cannot meet all the demands, it would be better for hotels to join forces to meet clients’ demand.
Business Development Director of InterContinental Singapore David Lam has forecasted that the number of tourists, especially businessmen, will increase again after one year of decreasing due to the global economic downturn.

Coastal Vietnam resorts invite holiday-makers to ‘Golf the Beach’
Two of Vietnam’s premier courses have joined forces in a bid to lure more golfers to one of the country’s most activity-rich tourist areas.
Ocean Dunes Golf Club in Phan Thiet and Sea Links Golf & Country Club in nearby Mui Ne have formed Golf the Beach: Vietnam’s Must-Play Getaway, to better showcase the virtues of this sandy strip along the country’s southeastern coast. The partnership’s web hub, www.golfthebeachvn.com, goes live on Feb. 22.
“It’s about strength in numbers, and that’s why Golf the Beach is a very exciting development indeed,” said Stephen Banks, general manager at Sea Links. “We’ve got two excellent championship courses here, with several more in the planning and construction stages, but this is the first time the Mui Ne/Phan Thiet area has been promoted as a golfing destination.
“We think it has major potential. We’re so close to Ho Chi Minh City, but a day or two has never done this region justice. Golf the Beach merely states the obvious: Golfers can come and play two of the best courses in Vietnam, each within 15 minutes of the other. At night, in between rounds, they can avail themselves of everything else the region has to offer.”
These non-golfing attractions are legion, which is why the Mui Ne/Phan Thiet strip has developed in recent years into a prime draw for both foreign and Vietnamese tourists. Sandy beaches, reliable sun, cooling breezes, and plentiful restaurants, accommodations and nightlife make Mui Ne in particular the country’s top beach destination.
To the north lie the famed Red Sands of Mui Ne while, to the south, stretch kilometers of open, quiet roads perfect for extended moped excursions to undeveloped beaches of one’s own choosing. At the same time, dependable wind and warm water have turned Mui Ne/Phan Thiet into one of the most popular spots for windsurfing and kite surfing in all of Southeast Asia.
“Or maybe you’d rather take the cable car up Ta Cu and lay down beside the largest recumbent Buddha in Southeast Asia,” said Glenn Cassells, director of golf at Ocean Dunes GC. “There’s a very relaxed feel about this part of Vietnam, both on and off the golf course. But it’s a beach destination at heart, and the vibe reflects that. It’s clean, sunny, slow and casual – especially when you’re coming from a place like Ho Chi Minh City, or any big city. It’s a place to truly get away.”
Golf has long been a stitch in this fabric. The Nick Faldo-designed course at Ocean Dunes has been a linchpin of the Vietnamese golf scene since opening in 1996. Indeed, it was the first modern resort course built in this country, the first to open outside the urban hubs of HCMC and Hanoi.
Sea Links, an attractive and formidable test created by acclaimed course architecture firm Golfplan, joined it in 2008, the product of a golf course development boom that still holds sway up and down the country.
The two courses offer golfers wildly contrasting yet equally compelling experiences.
Ocean Dunes is laid out at sea level – directly beside the East Sea – and combines elements of firm-and-fast links play, Florida resort golf, and colorful pine barrens. There are several standout holes that weave their way through the track’s dunescape, coniferous forest and chain of lakes. However, the uphill 9th – a par-3 played through a funnel of casuarinas pines to a raised green at seaside – is regularly voted among the best short holes in the world.
Sea Links, meanwhile, is more expansive and its dramatic location – amidst the dunes high above Mui Ne – offers spectacular long views of the East Sea. The undulating course is challenging; many experts rate it the toughest in the country. It measures 7,617 yards from the back tees, and holes such as the 4th – a treacherous long par-4 – and the signature dogleg 7th are as testing as they are visually pleasing.
“The two courses complement each other by being so very different,” confirmed Banks. “One is a flat course, one is hilly. One is more of a traditional design and one is thoroughly modern. Both are great courses, however, and they are never anything less than exhilarating. Golfers who come to this area for a golf week will almost definitely play both tracks more than once. That’s both our calling card and our mission.”
“We’ve got everything in place,” Cassells added. “As well as having two championship courses, this area has its own micro-climate so conditions are way better than the rest of Vietnam for much of the year. Cool breezes and sunshine – that’s every golfer’s dream.”
