A tour to Nha Phu Bay, 12km from Nha Trang city by boat, is the most popular activity. Different from others, this tour offers a trip to three islands where you can come close to the nature and hide away from dusty life, said Anh Vu, a tour guide from Long Phu Company.
The first destination is Hon Thi, the 500ha island covered by pine trees. You can walk in the forest of decandrous persimmon, the tree that is the namesake of the island.
You can find ostriches and deer in the forest. The deer will approach you if you offer them a hand full of maize, their favourite food.
The island is clean and pristine, and if you are an adventurous tourist, you can ask the guide leading you to go deep into woods to discover the caves.
Orchid Stream on Hon Heo Peninsula offer tourists spectacular scenes. It is a picturesque sight from the sparkling mirror of the water to the mountain tops.
Walking along Orchid Stream, tourists reach a world of hundreds of wild orchids collected abroad and throughout the country.
The orchid garden is designed as a thousand-year forest. Continuing up the mountain, tourists can enjoy the pure water from the Orchid Waterfall at 900m above the sea level.
You may skip the trek for a swim at An Binh Beach, relaxing by a hot spring nearby, or enjoying an animal circus performance. Or, you could entertain yourself with water sports, such as parasailing, kayaking and jet skiing.
Vu affirmed that no island in the central sea has as many freshwater streams as Hon Heo Peninsula. He proved it by digging a hole in a forest near the seaside, then in front of our surprised eyes, scooped up a bowl of freshwater.
Orchid Stream is rooted in an old love story between a poor man and a girl born to a rich family. The man was asked to bring aloe and salanganes’, two of the region’s precious specialities, as betrothal gifts. The girl decided to go with her lover to find the offerings for her parents. They went but found nothing.
The girl dropped off to sleep as she was too tired. When she woke up, she didn’t see the man. Seeking him, she found blood stains everywhere. She believed that he was attacked by beasts. She cried again and again until she dissolved in her stream of tears. This is the legend of the stream that now runs throughout the peninsula. Where the man bled, now we find various orchids growing and blossoming.
“The legend of old explains the beautiful land,” Vu said, “Even though I think underground water sources from Hon Heo Mountain bring water for lakes and streams here.”
“The peninsula connects to Truong Son Mountain Range, which also receives running water. The wet environment is good for wild orchids to grow,” he explained.
Amy Morris from the US said she loves the tropical gardens on Hon Heo Peninsula.
“A beautiful garden with a running stream and good size fish, some enchanting bridges to walk across, and a log to lay on for a beautiful photo, this place is amazing.”
“Watching orchids in bloom and the other colourful flowers is a little bit of paradise in Nha Trang,” she said.
Hon Lao or Monkey Island, home to thousands of monkeys, is the final destination of this tour. The island is like a pearl in the ocean.
Monkeys are everywhere on the island and are taught to not steal tourists’ belongings and attack people. When you are lying on the beach, don’t be surprised when you suddenly see some monkeys lying nearby.
The monkeys are smart and friendly. Their origin on the island dates back to 1983 when Vietnam and the former Soviet Union did research on primates for vaccines.
Although the monkeys are trained, the tour guide will warn you to be careful while feeding and playing with them.
“Looking at them, you may feel interested but don’t grin, they may misinterpret it as a threat,” he said.
“You’ll find it fun to play with the wild monkeys, but remember to obey the tourist area’s regulations to guarantee your safety and protect the natural life of the monkeys.”
Green beautiful stretches of flowers and a long strip of fine sand, about 500m long, is an ideal place for you to feed the monkeys and take pictures of them.
You can rent jetskis and kayaks on the island. If you are an enthusiasts of speed and adrenaline, you can enjoy racing karts. From scuba diving to snorkelling, you have access to a view of the beautiful ocean floor and the possibility of exploring the castles of coral and marine life.
Moments spent relaxing in nature or approaching wild animals are unforgettable. If you have more time, don’t limit yourself to just one day. Simple houses and bungalows are available, if you can spend a night without modern conveniences, to enjoy a quiet atmosphere.

When the sun is about to cast its last beams over ranges of mountains and hills surrounding Nha Trang Bay and the central coastal city, the Altitude Bar has soft music mixed with the sound of gentle waves slapping against the ocean shore beneath.

VietNamNet Bridge – With the theme “Nha Trang – Khanh Hoa: Civilized and Hospitality”, the Nha Trang Sea Festival 2011, will take place from June 11-15 in Nha Trang City. The festival will have one day event for Truong Sa (Spratly) Archipelago.
The sea festival will include around 50 events which will run throughout June. The most important parts will be activities to support the International Environmental Day (June 5), the International Ocean Day (June 
and the “Day for Truong Sa”.
The “Day for Truong Sa” is the day for mainland people to show their love to those who are living and working on Truong Sa Archipelago. Under the title “Exotic Beaches and Islands,” the upcoming National Tourism Year 2011 hosted by Phu Yen Province and its seven south-central coastal neighbors is mainly aimed at developing the region’s sea tourism, creating a base for the whole country’s sea tourism development. According to information announced by the event’s organizing board at a meeting held late last year in Hanoi, over 30 cultural, sport and tourism programs will be held from March to December this year in eight central coastal cities and provinces from Danang City to Binh Thuan Province. Some highlights are an ASEAN traditional festival, the first international chorus festival and a fireworks display contest (see more in the box).
A chance to lure more tourists
This is the first time the national tourism year is held in more than one locality. The hosts have been endowed with beautiful beaches and unique cultural values. But, they have also been notorious about weak cooperation to develop the region’s sea tourism and create unique products and services that are exciting enough to attract local and foreign tourists who will return again and again.
This is the reason why the national and local tourism authorities see this event as a good chance to start developing the regional sea tourism – a strong point of Vietnam with a coastline of over 3,600km.
At the meeting, Phu Yen Province’s authorities said that to carry out the event effectively, the province has prepared for three years, including infrastructure, transportation, re-setting up some festivals and creating some new products and services. It also organized a media trip to the province to promote the event as well as promotion trips to Singapore, Russia, Thailand, Myanmar and Cambodia to popularize the national event.
On the online newspaper of the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism (www.toquoc.gov.vn), Le Kim Anh, vice chairman of Phu Yen Province, says: “We know what our weak points are, so we need prepare carefully to get a good development. Phu Yen is still a poor province despite owning potentials of beaches and islands. So, the National Tourism Year 2010 is a golden chance to popularize and promote tourism to attract more tourists. However, the ambition is not too big. We are happy when more and more people know us after the event.”
Some VND24 billion is needed to organize events in Phu Yen alone, including over VND10 billion from sponsors.
The province has prepared 88 accommodation facilities with about 2,000 rooms and 10 tourism and entertainment facilities. The province will have some more hotels and resorts put into service in the coming time.
On the online newspaper of the Saigon Times Group, www.thesaigontimes.vn, Tran Quang Nhat, deputy director of the province’s Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism, says that the central coastal province of Phu Yen expects to welcome half a million tourists during the national tourism year in 2011, up about 180,000 compared to 2010.
The province also expects the festive year will help Phu Yen make a big change for tourism development, and make Phu Yen better known to tourists.
The national tourism year has been made an annual event and is alternatively organized in each potential province or city each year. The ministry has asked the Government to allow provincial governments to organize the annual national tourism promotion program from 2012 to 2017.
The national tourism year 2012 will take place in Thua Thien-Hue Province, followed by Haiphong City in 2013, Lam Dong Province in 2014, Thanh Hoa Province in 2015, Kien Giang Province in 2016 and Lao Cai Province in 2017.
Since the event was first organized in the northern province of Quang Ninh in 2003, the year-long annual program has been organized in Dien Bien, Nghe An, Quang Nam, Thai Nguyen, Can Tho and Hanoi. |

The National Tourism Year 2011 will take place in many localities in the south central coastal region. On this occasion, Saigon-Phu Yen Tourism Joint Stock Company introduces many events to attract tourists.
The National Tourism Year in south central coastal region, Phu Yen 2011, is expected to go with more than 30 cultural, sport and tourist events of national and international levels.
The event, hosted by Phu Yen Province together with other localities in the central region – Danang, Quang Nam, Quang Ngai, Binh Dinh, Khanh Hoa, Ninh Thuan and Binh Thuan, aims to mark the 400 years of its establishment and development.
Throughout this year, south central coastal provinces, especially Phu Yen, will hold a series of activities for the National Tourism Year. The key of them are the sea and island tourism, meeting and parade to celebrate the 400th anniversary of Phu Yen on April 1, international seminar on “Cultural legacies in Vietnam’s south central region” on April 2 and 3, and the cultural exchange night between Vietnam and South Korea and some other countries on April 3.
Phu Yen has a 189-kilometer coastline with sceneries of wild beauty such as Cu Mong and O Loan lagoons, Vung Ro and Xuan Dai bays, and Dai Lanh Cape. In particular, this province has Da Dia Rock as the country’s exclusive scenic spot and more than 10 desolate, beautiful beaches.
Phu Yen is also a land with a cultural tradition and many historical events. The inhabitation of various ethnic groups creates an abundant folk culture. Visitors to the province will enjoy the sounds of Tuy An District’s rock music instrument, attend fishermen’s festivals, or festivals of ethnic communities with people playing gongs around a big fire.
Saigon-Phu Yen Tourism Joint Stock Company, which is an affiliate of Saigontourist Holding Company and runs Saigon Phu Yen Hotel and Huong Sen Hotel in the provincial city of Tuy Hoa, will welcome the national tourism year with its business activities.
Saigon Phu Yen Hotel, one of the biggest accommodation facilities in Tuy Hoa, has 87 rooms, 10 suites, a hall for 300 people, restaurants with five sections to serve Vietnamese, Asian and European cuisines, and bars. Providing places for conferen-ces and parties are among its servi-ces. The four-star hotel was brought into operation in August last year.
The hotel has launched two new programs. That is, it serves dinner buffets with more than 30 selected dishes for VND49,000-59,000 on weekends and offers rooms with a price discount for VND400,000 per night.
Huong Sen Hotel, accredited with two-star standards, consists of 56 rooms. Competitive room rates make it one of the best venues for visitors to the city.

A certificate honouring Xuan Dai Bay as a National Landscape Site was presented to the Phu Yen provincial Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism on March 28.
The bay was officially recognised as a national landscape treasure, according to a Decision approved by the Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism on January 20, 2011.
Xuan Dai Bay, with a water surface area of about 13,000 hectares, is located between Song Cau town and Tuy An district in Phu Yen province. The bay is encircled by mountains which shape delightful, unique pools. The bank surrounding the bay is about 50 kilometres long and overlooks beautiful natural scenery with an endless white sandy beach.
The acknowledgement of the bay as a national landscape treasure will help promote the site’s tourism potential and create favourable conditions to exploit and develop different kinds of tourism in the locality.
The bay will be submitted for consideration as a member of the World’s Most Beautiful Bays Club.

Co-ordinated efforts by the Government, local and tourism authorities, and the travel industry are needed to develop a strong brand for Vietnamese coastal tourism, experts have said.
“A development strategy for developing a brand should be drafted and supported by the Government and tourism associations,” Dr Nguyen Van Luu, deputy head of the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism’s Training Department, told a seminar in Mui Ne last week.
The seminar, on developing coastal tourism, was held under the aegis of the four-day International Sailing festival in Binh Thuan Province which closed on 20th March.
Tourism authorities and companies should focus on the country’s typical and most attractive features – like safety, friendliness, and hospitality – to create the brand, Luu said.
To strengthen that brand, good tourism products should be created.
Dr Nguyen Anh Tuan of the Viet Nam National Administration of Tourism, in a presentation that was distributed to delegates, said Viet Nam remained relatively undiscovered by global tourists, which is a strong point.
“It has advantages like picturesque bays, long and beautiful beaches, and unexplored islands and caves,” he said.
He suggested five sub-brands based on an area’s attractions: Sea-landscape for Halong Bay, relaxation and cultural heritage (Hue, Hoi an, My Son), long stay and relaxation by the sea in the central region, sea sports in Nha Trang and Mui Ne, and sea-island exploration in Phu Quoc and Con Dao.
In doing so, localities should focus on competitive tourism products and invest in key projects like high-end resorts while preserving natural landscapes, several participants said.
It was necessary to develop wharves for tourist boats and sea routes to meet tourists’ needs.
Dr Vo Sang Xuan Lan, head of Van Lang University’s tourism faculty, also in a presentation that was distributed, said the sea tourism brand should factor in destinations, service providers and culture, including folk culture, the habits, customs and nature of people.
He cited the example of Hoi An, which has become a popular tourist destination due to the preservation of the ancient town and its people, who are fully aware of their role in welcoming visitors and conserving the environment and their heritage.
Ngo Minh Chinh, director of Binh Thuan’s Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism, suggested that major events like yacht races and surfing and beauty contests should be organised to promote coastal and island tourism.
Viet Nam as a destination for tourism, especially coastal tourism, is still not very popular, figures from the ASEAN Travel Forum 2010 show. Last year Malaysia attracted more than 18 million international visitors, Thailand received almost 16 million, Singapore was third with 10.5 million, and Indonesia welcomed 7 million.
Viet Nam ranked fifth with more than 5 million arrivals above the Philippines, Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar and Brunei, the remaining ASEAN members.

The fifth biennial Sea Festival 2011 will be held in Nha Trang from June 11-15 with Truong Sa (Spratly) Archipelago as highlight.
According to the Khanh Hoa Province People’s Committee, the festival will include a photo exhibition of the Vietnamese islands, a music show, a film screening and a conference on the Truong Sa District.
Artists from France, Korea, China, Cuba, and Russia will all perform during the event.
The festival will also include a celebration of bird’s nests, a provincial beauty pageant and a Made-in-Vietnam Goods Fair on Nha Trang, Doc Let and Bai Dai beaches.
In addition, the festival will include many environmental activities, including a scientific conference on preserving Nha Trang Bay and a citywide trash pick up.
According to the organizers, the biennial festival is aimed at promoting the province’s traditional cultural values and tourism industry.
