The Ho Dynasty’s extremely short tenure is marked by long-standing achievements including a citadel that still stands, six centuries later

The southern entrance of the Ho Dynasty (1400-1407)’s citadel with three gates in Thanh Hoa Province
The Ho Dynasty was founded in 1400 after Ho Quy Ly (1336-1407), the highest-ranking general of the Tran Dynasty, dethroned King Tran Thieu De and declared himself the new emperor. However, his reign proved short-lived when China’s Ming Dynasty invaded and took over the country in 1407.
Although Ly has been heavily criticized for overthrowing the Tran Dynasty and letting China dominate the country again after 500 years of independence, several reforms that he initiated during his eight-year reign have stood the test of time, including the circulation of paper money.
He is also said to have brought new ideas to the construction of the Tay Do (Western Capital) citadel, in present-day Thanh Hoa Province, where he placed the central government.
The citadel is considered a “miracle of labor”, as it was built manually in just three months. After more than 600 years, the monument still stands, and the mystery of how it was built still endures.
Built with green block granite, the citadel was trapezoidal while other citadels until then were built of bricks and clay earth and bricks and were hexagon shaped.
| GETTING THERE |
By motorbike or car:
From Thanh Hoa Town, go northeast along the National Way No. 45 for about 43 kilometers.
Or, from Ha Trung District, go along National Way No. 217 to Vinh Loc District which is about 20 kilometers away.
By bus:
Buses to the citadel are available on both the national ways from Thanh Hoa Town.
Ticket prices: VND10,000 (US$0.51) each person.
To Thanh Hoa Town: A four-hour train journey from the Hanoi railway station; and you can get there by car, bus or even motorbike on National Highway No.1.

Round stones believed to have been used as levers to move giant granite blocks to build the citadel hundreds of years ago
|
The rocks, some of which are 1.3 meters high and 1.59 meters wide, were brought from many places by road or by river. How the work was done remains a mystery.
The citadel has an average height of between five and six meters, with some points reaching ten meters. Its north-south and east-west lengths are 870.5 meters 883.5 meters respectively. It has entrances on all sides, but the main one in the south, with the biggest of its three grates stretching 5.82 meters wide.
Historic documents show that Ly ordered that the citadel be built in 1397, and then coerced Kinh Tran Dieu De to move the capital from Thang Long(now Hanoi).
Three years later, he dethroned the king and set up his own court at the citadel, which has been praised by historians for its good geographical location, as it is backed by three mountains and has two rivers flowing through it.
Inside the citadel there once were palaces comparable to Thang Long’s, but all of them were abandoned and destroyed when Ly was captured and taken prisoner by Ming troops.
In recent years, the old citadel has been opened to tourists who can either make it a destination on its own or as part of a package tour that links different destinations, like Sam Son – Ho Dynasty citadel – Cam Luong Spring – Lam Kinh.
Among the interesting artifacts at the citadel are round stones that are believed to have been used as levers to move giant granite blocks hundreds of years ago.
As at other Vietnamese destinations, local culinary specialties are on offer. In Vinh Loc District, where the citadel is located, che lam and banh rang bua – different varieties of rice cake, are worth trying.

| An exciting experience from any dangerous situation is called “Adventure”. The adventure traveling activity includes skydiving, mountain climbing, scuba diving, skiing and any kind of extreme sports. |
I would like to watch only adventurous sports. It creates an excitement and makes us to avoid moving. It was the initial stage when I attracted towards this adventure. My first adventure started traveling on mountainous areas for mountain walking. Slowly I moved to the next step of trekking. Now, my interest includes mountain walking, hiking, trekking and mountain climbing.
I found Vietnam is a wonderful destination for your trekking. Vietnam is surrounded by beautiful mountains. They are feasible for trekking or hiking or mountain walking. The queen of the mountains in Vietnam is Sapa. It is a wonderful destination for the beginners as well as for the experienced trekkers.
Sapa looks spectacular with lofty mountains. The fabulous scenery surrounding sapa attracts more trekkers into Vietnam. It is easy to undertake hikes through the valleys around Sapa. It has endless places for hiking. The nearest village within walking distance is Cat Cat. It is steep and wonderful place for hiking. Another popular trekking area is Phin village.
You can enjoy adventurous hiking experience on the Hoang Lien Mountain range which is surrounding the sapa. It is called as Tonkinese Alps by the French. It is at the tail end of Himalaya.
Sapa is accessible in all the season. Trekkers should be fit and well equipped to face the challenges. The walking space is very wet and can be slippery. The climate is cold on the mountains. Travelers should be prepared to travel to Sapa.
Black Virgin Mountain is also a wonderful place for your mountain walking in Vietnam. The mountain has some historical story. It is called as the center of a myth about Ba Den, a Vietnamese woman. This mountain has theme park. Study their weather and start your trekking trip.
Thinks you should consider before your hiking trip:
1. It is essential to be fit before taking any trip. It is better to do a medical fitness check up done. It is good to have a vaccination for malaria, cholera, tetanus, typhoid and hepatitis according to your travel destination. It is advisable to carry medicines related to ailments from which you are previously suffering.
2. Dehydration is a common issue when you go for trekking. Keep enough fluid items to keep you rehydrate.
3. Choose proper shoes for trekking. Rough pair of shoes can severely hurt your feet while trekking.
4. Remember to carry food items that made up of carbohydrates. It will help you to hike with enough energy.
5. Always take important medicine and first aid box with you.
6. It is important to cover your neck area, mainly in frequently changing weather. It can lead to serious neck problems and pains.
7. Do not forget to wear stockings or thick woolen socks while trekking. You can also use Synthetic blended socks as these socks are especially designed to prevent feet moisture.Get things ready before going for trekking. Enjoy your hiking in the majestic mountains of Vietnam.

Fishermen on Ke Ga Island prepare to go out to sea
“This is the life.” I thought to myself as I lay soaking in a honey and flower bath tub in the tropical garden of the Princess D’Annam Resort & Spa. “Things can’t get much better.”
I was soon to be proved wrong, however.
While I was taking tea, I saw an imposing and mysterious stone lighthouse standing tall on a rocky outlet, protecting all boats in the area. It was getting late but I couldn’t resist the idea of a sunset adventure to see Ke Ga lighthouse up close.
Ke Ga is a small village that lies on the coast. Under the water’s surface, the sea bed is dotted with rocks that pose dangers to boats out at sea. The French built the lighthouse from February 1897 to the end of 1898 to aid both local and foreign ships. It began operations in 1900.
“No one has ever wanted to visit the lighthouse at night.” the F&B manager of the resort, taken aback at my request, told me. “I will arrange for someone to accompany you.”
Before long, I was walking down the beach, my feet delighting in the soft sand, with Le Nam, the member of staff nominated to make my dream of adventure come true. I didn’t feel too sorry for him, though; he was grinning from ear to ear with the excitement of a newcomer that had just moved from Mui Ne (Ne Cape).
We reached the end of the bay where a fisherman took us across to the lighthouse in his basket boat. Waves attacked us from either side as the tiny boat bobbed up and down on the choppy waters.
After a fraught ten-minute journey, we reached a small island lined with large rocks into which waves crashed relentlessly, leaving in their wake white foam that swirled and frothed like a witch’s cauldron. Up above, the crescent-shaped bay took our breath away. Further in the distance stood white sand dunes dotted with trees while looming above us was the old lighthouse that stood proudly and silently at the edge of the sea.
| HOW TO GET THERE |
Ke Ga is around 35 km from Phan Thiet Town in Binh Thuan Province, which is four hours by car from Ho Chi Minh City. Sinh Café has buses from HCMC to Phan Thiet three times a day.
Ke Ga Lighthouse, which was put into operation in 1900, is one of the oldest existing lighthouses in Vietnam. |
The wind was the only noise apart from the sound of the birds circling the top of the lighthouse
I wanted to spend more time watching the waves pound the rocks, but our tour guide hurried us along so as to see everything before it got dark. With the sun setting on the horizon, we passed the majestic frangipani (plumeria rubra) trees in full bloom, said to have been planted when the lighthouse was built.
Inside the lighthouse, it was cold and so dark that we couldn’t see our fingertips. There was a spiral staircase leading to the top. And on the way up were small windows, similar to those of a French chateau, which looked out onto a breathtaking landscape. At the top was a balcony that held panoramic views of the surrounding coastal area and the sea. From there, I could see all the way to Mui Ne with its white sands.
The climb and the excitement upon seeing the view soon took its toll. We couldn’t pass up the chance, however, to visit the only house on the island with its whitewashed walls and blue windows. We met Trung, one of the six people that take care of the lighthouse.
“I have lived here a long time and the weather has proved to be good for my health. Every day, I climb up to the top of the lighthouse at least once to check everything and to make sure the solar panels that run the lights are operational. Local and foreign boats pass by this area so it’s important that the lighthouse is always on at night.”
Trung was generous enough to invite me to come back and visit Ke Ga with my friends. “Next time, when you could come back with someone special please stay with us. It will be a night to remember.”
The way back seemed more fraught with danger. In the darkness, the sea was more threatening and unpredictable with waves going over our heads, it seemed.
Just as we were about to board the boat to go back to the resort, we were stopped by a fisherman who invited us to his boat for dinner. It turned out he was from Quy Nhon Town in central Binh Dinh Province and had come here to work. The dinner of green mango salad, dried fish and fried pork was simple but tasty. Inside, I missed the fresh sea breeze and began to feel sleepy. Before long, we said our goodbyes with our new friends and headed back to the resort for a good night’s sleep.
That was enough adventure for one day.

VietNamNet Bridge – Thousands of visitors attended the opening day of the International Tourism Festival in the Bao Son Paradise Theme Park on Saturday.
 |
| Visitors at the photography exhibition – “Ha Noi 1,000 Years Old” – at the Temple of Literature view some of the 1,000 photos on display. |
The festival features a wide range of cultural and tourism information about countries on five continents. International tourism companies and industry representatives from many countries have come to the festival to display their destinations and services such as Laos, Cambodia, Thailand, China, Bangladesh, Brazil, Egypt and Japan.
Vietnamese tourism businesses are taking this opportunity to present their tourism services at more than 90 booths, while Ha Noi agents are introducing the city’s potential at 180 separate booths.
Hout Sinuon, deputy director of the Cambodian Statistics and Tourism Information Department, said many festival attendees had already visited his booth.
“We are here to promote our culture and tourist attractions,” he said. “We think we will successfully lure tourists to Cambodia.”
An international workshop today will focus on practical benefits of co-operation opportunities, experience exchange, tourism development and joint-venture tourist projects.
The Bao Son Paradise Theme Park is the biggest entertainment and tourism complex in the city. Opened to the public last year, the park was developed to quench the local population’s thirst for entertainment and relaxation.
The 20ha entertainment and tourism complex consists of four main areas: traditional craft villages of Viet Nam, a replica of Ha Noi’s old quarter, an eco-tourism area and a culinary section offering cuisine from all corners of Viet Nam.
Many cultural and art activities are being organised throughout the park during the four-day festival.
A stage has been set up at the park’s gate to feature international music and a carnival. Visitors can also enjoy listening to traditional Vietnamese music such as cheo (traditional opera), folk singing from the central region, chau van (spiritual music), quan ho (love duets) and ca tru (ceremonial singing) at the village hall in the traditional craft village area. Two puppetry performances will be held every day during the festival.
Visitors will have the chance to join folk games such as walking on stilts, bamboo swinging, human chess and throwing a ball through a ring at the ethnic village’s replica of a Thai stilt house.
The park’s old quarter area brings back Ha Noi’s past life through calligraphy demonstrations, xam (blind blusker) singing, to he (toy figurines) making and street vendors.
“We’re trying to offer as many traditional Vietnamese art performances as possible,” says Nguyen Truong Son, director of Bao Son Group, owner of the park. “The performances will change everyday during the four day exhibition so visitors will be able to enjoy something different each day.”

“With the theme Thang Long-Ha Noi, Convergence of 1,000 Years, this will be the biggest event held to celebrate the 1,000th anniversary of the capital, and the 50th anniversary of the Ha Noi Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism’s tourism industry,” said Mai Tien Dung, deputy director of the department.
“The International Tourism Festival is a key National Tourism Year activity and aims to introduce and honour the cultural and historical values of the capital. This event will also help promote Viet Nam’s tourism products and services in the international market,” he said.
The park and Thang Long Road, where the park is located, were built to mark the city’s millennium.
The opening ceremony for the Cong Nhan (Workers) Theatre was another cultural highlight that took place on Saturday in the capital.
Chairwoman of the city’s People Council, Ngo Thi Doan Thanh, and vice chairman of the People’s Committee Phi Thai Binh attended the ceremony.
Located at 42 Trang Tien Street, the theatre was first built in 1917 and was used as a cinema. After the liberation of the city from the French in 1954, the name of the theatre was changed to its current name.
The theatre’s renovation began in October 2007. The three-storey theatre, which includes a 500-seat auditorium and a well-equipped stage, is now ready to host a variety of different events.
The theatre’s opening is helping celebrate the city’s grand anniversary.
On the same day, a collection of 94 valuable books about Thang Long-Ha Noi were unveiled at the National Library in the capital.
A display showcasing documents about the capital city is also open to the public at the library.
Nguyen Dang Duc Bao’s win in the men’s 8,750m event at the Ha Noi Moi newspaper’s Run for Peace around Hoan Kiem Lake helped his Khanh Hoa team secure the team title yesterday in Ha Noi.
Bao, who has been the runner to beat during the past several years, stole the triumph from Nguyen Van Lai from the Military team in the last hundreds metres.
Lai failed to defend his title and finished second, followed by Bui The Anh from the Border Guard team.
The Border Guard surpassed the Military to take second place in the team event.
On the women’s side, Thanh Hoa sprinter Nguyen Thi Phuong won the gold medal in the 5,250m event. Nguyen Dang Thanh Thuy, who is Bao’s younger sister, came in second while Nguyen Thi Huong from Thai Binh finished third.
Phuong’s top place failed to help her Thanh Hoa team finish in the top three. The team title went to Khanh Hoa, with Thai Binh taking second and Quang Ninh finishing third.
Khanh Hoa easily won the overall title at the event.
Apart from the events for professionals, the running contest also had categories for amateurs.
The annual event marks the 56th anniversary of Ha Noi’s liberation (October 10) and the 1,000th anniversary of the founding of the capital.

When wandering around Da Lat, the city of mist and pine trees, tourists might experience four seasons in one day: a spring morning, summer afternoon, autumn twilight and winter evening. However, in terms of business, the flower city has only two seasons: peak season and low season.
About 300 kilometers from Ho Chi Minh City and 1500 kilometers from Hanoi, Da Lat City, capital of the central highlands province of Lam Dong, exhales its own poetic and romantic charm with its beautiful mountain scenery and delightfully cool mountain weather. Peak season is from January of the lunar year and lasts until summer. During this time there are a number of festivals and tourist services tend to be priced higher.
On the other hand, tourists who visit the flower city in the low season can still enjoy the beautiful landscapes of the small city without spending a lot of money. Hotels in Da Lat and lodging houses nestled in corners of the city are at ‘soft’ prices.
To experience the romance of valleys, magnificence of waterfalls and art of ancient houses and pagodas visitors can rent a motorbike to ride around the poetic city, or a tandem tourist bicycle.
When heading to Da Lat, tourists should be sure to stop at Prenn Waterfalls, located at the foot of Prenn pass and about 10 km from Da Lat City; a panoramic view of the falls can be enjoyed from the cable car. Alternatively, a visit to the forest and Au Lac Temple nearby can be arranged with a hired carriage or jeep for four people.

Prenn Waterfalls
An adventurous and fascinating trip awaits tourists at Datanla Waterfalls, located about 3 kilometers from Prenn falls, on a roller coaster bob sled which runs from the top of the cliffs to the bottom of the falls. The descent is breathtaking and exciting, but guests surely will find the landscape of the falls equally stunning and invigorating, as the falls create a sheet of silver pouring into a pool of water.
Next stop must be Cam Ly Waterfall, which is a well known as a tourist-magnet for domestic visitors and the home of horses and Da Lat’s cowboys. Peace and tranquility is found in the nature and poetry of nearby Than Tho Lake (lake of sorrow).
At Mong Mo Hill (dreamlike hill) area, tourists can enjoy a relaxing and pleasant time wandering on this “little” Great Wall, listening to the sounds of water from the artificial waterfall and sensing the soul of the upland region at a cong chieng (gongs) performance of the local ethnic minority artists every weekend.
The most impressive venue may be Hang Cop (the cave of the tiger) Waterfall, so called because at the foot of the waterfall there is a large cave where a fierce tiger was trapped by people. On the descent to the bottom of the fall on old stone paths, adventurers will see abundant, violent waterfalls breaking off into small streams and falling over huge rocks. It is really a scene of the most attractive and majestic wild landscape.
Da Lat owns many attractive landscapes from waterfalls to ancient pagodas and houses influenced by French architecture and Vietnamese charms. A two week holiday here will pass quickly exploring these and other sights.
Last but not least, Langbian Mountain is an absolute must for anyone wanting to conquer a peak of over 2,000 meter high, with endless views of green mountains reflecting the silver rays of the sun.

On the first night of Hanoi’s 10 day celebration of its 1,000 year anniversary, 100 models performed in the Ao Dai Festival by Hoan Kiem Lake in the city centre.
Based on an idea of bringing the finest of Vietnamese culture and tradition into the design, organisers designed and created 600 of the traditional dresses for the festival. The festival included two main themes: One showed the city of Hanoi in the past and the other showed special features of the ao dai from Vietnam’s three regions. From these two themes, organisers have prepared several Ao dai collections such as “Recalling memories”, “Sacred dragon features”, “Hanoi’s streets” and “Sunny flowers”.
Below are some snapshots of the show last night:
